Our client is a leading private provider of Pathology and Diagnostic services across Victoria. As part of a larger organization with over 8,000 staff, 100 laboratories, and 2,000 collection centres nationwide, they play a vital role in delivering high-quality diagnostic solutions across metropolitan, regional, and remote Australia. Their central Sydney laboratory is now seeking a Chief Scientist to lead and support their Microbiology (Bacteriology) team, driving excellence in laboratory operations and patient care.
About the role Reporting to the Laboratory Operations Manager, you will play a pivotal role in leading and shaping the strategy and operations of a team of 50 scientists and technicians within the Clinical Microbiology (Bacteriology) department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Scientific & Professional Leadership – Drive excellence in microbiology services through expert guidance and innovation.
- Team Management & Engagement – Oversee staff performance, enhance productivity, and foster a collaborative team culture.
- Regulatory Compliance – Ensure all work practices align with NATA, TGA, and NPACC standards.
- Quality Management – Conduct internal and external audits to maintain the highest standards of service and accreditation.
- Training & Professional Development – Lead competency programs and staff development with team leaders and senior management.
- Diagnostic Expertise – Perform diagnostic assays, result validation, and troubleshooting in microbiology testing.
- Innovation & Technology Integration – Stay at the forefront of industry advancements, assessing and implementing new technologies and methodologies.

About you
To be considered for this role your skills and attributes should include:
- Suitable tertiary qualification in Medical Laboratory Science/Clinical Microbiology is essential.
- AIMS accreditation is essential
- At least 8 years of experience in a Clinical Diagnostic Microbiology Laboratory (Bacteriology)
- Experience with Staff Training and Supervision.
- Good troubleshooting skills are essential.
- Sound experience with laboratory based analytical tasks, method validation and verification, as well as clinical result validation and interpretation.
- Exceptional communication and problem-solving skills
